History of Education in Africa – ISCHE Standing Working Group and online conference on December 9

Orlando Chemane (Mozambique), Pierre Guidi (France), Ellen Vea Rosnes (Norway) and Florence Wenzek (Université Paris Cité) have just established the Standing Working Group “Histories of Education in African Societies” within the International Standing Conference for the History of Education (ISCHE).

In line with the conferences we organized and the books we publish ed in the last years, we aim to strengthen an international network of scholars working on the history of education from the perspective of African educational actors. We want to seek new questions, re-examine commonly used sources and explore new ones. To do so, we believe that a strong network is needed and that ISCHE offers the relevant framework. You will find the presentation here: https://www.ische.org/about-ische/standing-working-groups/

The group will stand for five years and will carry on the following activities :

1) 4 online seminars per academic year. The first will be on Monday 9 December 2024, 4-pm-6 pm (French time)

2) panels at annual ISCHE conferences. The next will be on 8-11 July 2025 in Lille, France. The Call for Applications is open: https://www.ische.org/ische-conference/upcoming-conferences/ische-46-lille/

3) a special issue of Paedagogica Historica (and perhaps other publications)

To be informed of the activities we plan and to communicate together, please register on the following mailing list : https://listes.ird.fr/sympa/info/histories-education-african-societies (1) Follow the link; 2) click on “s’abonner” on the left ; 3) enter your e-mail address and name; 4) click on “je m’abonne à histories-education-african-societies”.)

ISCHE 46 — Teachers and Teaching. History on the move

The ISCHE 46 wishes to look at the history of teachers and teaching, from the earliest times to the beginning of the 21st century, in all its diversity, from primary school teachers taking care of young children to teachers in higher education, from full professors with a diploma to part-time teachers and professionals who occasionally took on the role of trainer, from preceptors to teaching congregations, to families taking on the task of educating children and the various practices of self-teaching. As key players in the history of education, teachers are defined by UNESCO as all those responsible for educating pupils, all those who teach others. However, teaching has never been the exclusive preserve of professionals and/or people who devote themselves exclusively to this task.
